Whether you're looking to start a new career or generate extra money from a side hustle, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to become a licensed security guard in the California.

Step 1: Meet Basic Requirements

Other than completing your high school education, no specific work experience is required. However, it is required by law that all security guards be officially licensed by the state to work legally. Licensing eligibility criteria include: 

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Criminal Background: You must undergo a criminal background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ)

How much does it cost to obtain a security license in California?

Your application and the licensing fee vary depending on the license type. For example, as of July 2021, a Security Guard application fee is $55, and renewal fees are $40.

How do I get a criminal background check?

You must submit your Security Guard license application before doing your criminal history check to avoid processing delays.

Your criminal history background check is conducted through the Department of Justice (DOJ). To get started, download, and fill out your contact information and job details on the Security Officer Request for Live Scan Service form. This form has been pre-filled with the necessary information to ensure it is processed correctly and submitted directly to the BSIS.

There are processing fees associated with Live Scan and the DOJ, as the applicant, you are responsible for paying these directly when you are fingerprinted.

Step 2: Complete Required Training

Training is a crucial part of becoming a security guard. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Pre-Assignment Training: You must complete a mandatory 8-hour "Power to Arrest" training course. This course covers topics such as the responsibilities and ethics of a security guard, the legal powers to arrest, and the role of the security guard in emergency situations. We typically recommend purchasing training from the Security and Firearms Training Academy (SAFTA).
  • Additional Training: After your initial 8-hour training, you are required to complete an additional 32 hours of training within the first six months of employment. This includes 16 hours within the first 30 days and another 16 hours within the next six months. We typically recommend purchasing training from the TwoProtect Training Institute.

All training must be through a Private Control Officer or a BSIS-approved training facility or course provider. Always keep at least two years’ worth of training records if requested by your employer.

Step 3: Submit Your Application

Next, you’ll need to submit your application to the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Here’s how:

  • Application Form: Online applications are collected through the BreEZe system. This method bypasses the Cashiering Office and can reduce your application processing time by up to two weeks. The system will ask you to create an account, pay your application fee by credit card, then submit your application.
  • Fees: Pay the required fees, which include the application fee and the fingerprint processing fee for the DOJ background checks.
  • Fingerprinting: Submit your fingerprints through the Live Scan fingerprinting process. You will need to provide the Live Scan form along with your application.

Processing time

The process takes 4-6 weeks, assuming there are no concerns or missing information in your application. By submitting your application online, it is likely to be closer to four weeks.

Applications can get delayed when you submit your application via mail and are also dependent on when the BSIS received your criminal history results.

If you have not received your results within 60 days, call the BSIS at (916) 322-4000 or (800) 952-5210 or email them at bsis@dca.ca.gov. They regularly experience high call volumes and suggest that email is the fastest way to get an update.

Step 4: Receive Your Guard Card

Once your application and background check are approved, you will receive your Security Guard Registration Card (commonly known as a Guard Card). This card is your ticket to legally work as a security guard in California.

Be sure to carry your Guard Card with you at all times, as it is legally required in California to have a valid and current security guard registration card on you while on duty.

Step 5: Maintain your Guard Card

Keeping your Guard Card up to date is essential for maintaining your eligibility to work. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Renewal: Your Guard Card is valid for two years. Make sure to renew it before it expires by completing the required continuing education and paying the renewal fee. You are able to renew your Guard Card license 60 days before the renewal date.
  • Continuing Education: Complete an additional 8 hours of continuing education training every year to stay current with industry standards and regulations.
